Why the
Acropolis is special
The Acropolis ("high city") is a mammoth, steep-sided rock
outcropping overlooking Athens, Greece. It's crowned by an
Acropolis complex conceived and built by 5th century BC Athenean
statesman Pericles. Interestingly, the world today widely
praises its architecture, but some of Pericles's contemporaries
considered it to be in poor taste.
Parthenon
The focal point of the Acropolis complex is the stunning
Parthenon (see top-right section of photo). The Parthenon, which
means "virgin's dwelling," was erected to honor Athena, the
city's protecting goddess.
Other main Acropolis attractions
They include the Caryatids (a row of female statues functioning
as columns) and the sculpture-rich Acropolis Museum.
Tribulations in past four centuries
Time has been unkind to the Acropolis. In 1687 (over 2,000 years
after the Acropolis was built), a stray cannon shell blew up
ammunition being stored inside the Parthenon. The explosion
permanently collapsed the roof and seriously damaged the
columned walls. In the early 1800s, priceless marbles (now
called the Elgin Marbles) were transferred without Greek
approval to the British Museum in London. Lately, air-pollution
is badly eroding what's left of the buildings.

اکروپلیس در
یونان اکروپلیس( یا شهرمرتفع) یک ماموت است , تخته سنگ شیب
داری که در آتن (پایتخت یونان ) چشم اندازی را بوجود آورده
است. این بنا توسط امارت آکروپلیس پوشانده می شود و در 5
قرن قبل از میلا د توسط یک سیاستمدار آتنی ساخته شده است.
امروزه همه دنیا این معماری جالب را می ستایند اما این در
حالی است که در همان زمان برخی از معماران هم عصر آنرا کار
کم ارزشی به حساب می آورده اند. نقطه مرکزی امارت آکروپلیس
بنای بسیار جالب پارتنون می باشد. پارتنون که به معنای محل
اقامت باکره ها می باشد برای احترام به آتنا خدای محافظ
شهر ساخته شد. از دگر زیباییهای آکروپلیس می توان به مجسمه
های مونثی اشاره کرد که به عنوان ستون بکار می روند و
همچنین موزه جالبی که در آن مجسمه های باشکوهی به چشم می
خورند. آکروپلیس در طول حیات خود شاهد ناملایمات زمان بوده
است چنانکه در 1687 هنگامیکه در حدود 2000 سال از ساخت آن
می گذشت یک گلوله توپ بی هدف به داخل پارتنون اثابت کرده و
باعث می شود که مقداری از سقف آن فرو ریخته و آسیبهای جدی
به ستونهای آن وارد آید. در 1880هم بدون موافقت یونان سنگ
مرمرهای بسیار پرارزش آکروپلیس به موزه لندن انتقال داده
شدند و چندی بعد به واسطه آلودگی هوا دچار فرسایش و خرابی
شدند.
