Why
Dubrovnik is special
Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic", is relatively
small but offers the traveler a rich variety of exciting
experiences, including...
-- Walking along the top of the encircling fortified walls for
perspective views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding vividly blue
Adriatic Sea.
-- Unwinding at the picturesque Old Port of Dubrovnik as you
absorb the sight of the colorful small boats neatly moored in
the blue-watered harbor.
-- Promenading down Stradun, the main avenue that bisects
Dubrovnik Old City (be sure to stop and relax at one of the
street's many people-watching cafes).
-- Exploring the maze of charming medieval back streets (nearly
all these buildings were erected before the 14th century and are
designed in the Roman and Gothic architectural styles).
-- Enjoying world-class music, dance and theatre performances at
the famous annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
Recent war damage
In the early 1990s, the Old City was shelled during a regional
war - and buildings were seriously damaged. Fortunately,
Dubrovnik is now restored to its former appeal thanks to an
international effort led by UNESCO.
